What is a Hammock Chair?

The hammock chair is growing in popularity today.  It seems that each season we see more and more on front porches or decks of homes.  It's really no wonder since the hammock chair is a great change from the traditional porch swing or chair and they provide more versatility and comfort.

The hammock chair is lightweight and can be easily taken down and moved to a new location for a change in view.  As with the rope hammock, the hammock chair was created for comfort and relaxation.  As with a regular hammock, these chairs are most relaxing and just inviting you to sit and rest for while.

All true hammock chairs are made to be hung from an overhead support.  Many times a porch roof beam or overhang will do the job.   But as popularity has grown, some manufacturers have created stand-alone hanging systems which enable you to move your hammock chair into more open areas.

The traditional hammock chairs are made from rope weaved into a netting to form a seat.  Sometimes a pad or cloth is used as the actual seat.  These rope hammock chairs are flexible and conform to the person's body giving a most comfortable web as it forms around them.  A rope hammock chair usually has a wooden bar above the swing through which is threaded the hammock ropes.  This all contributes to the strength of the chair and the ultimate comfort of the user.  Hammock chairs are also made of cloth and other materials and these also prove to be very comfortable.  In fact in many cases, the cloth hammock chairs are more appealing in appearance.

Regardless of type, the hammock chairs are very easy to install and only take a couple minutes.  First you must locate a support beam or tree limb which is capable of supporting the weight of the chair plus any user.  The location should also provide enough space so the person sitting in the chair will not bump into anything if he or she should swing around in the seat.  Finally be sure to hang the chair at a height which makes getting in and out easy.  This is sometimes an are that the installer doesn't consider until its too late.

The other type of hammock chair is those which are ground based or made of a wooden structure.  These wooden framed chairs will use rope netting to form a seat.  This type of hammock chair comes in many varieties and very popular due to the ease of installation.  Since the chair has a wood frame, you have the comfort of a hammock chair but the versatility of a standard patio chair.
